There's Something About Boats

Stories are held in the fibres of crackled paint and arthritic wood. If you have an ear to see and and eye to listen, you too will know...

There's something about little boats.
As a child I sat on the shore lines wanting to touch them. They were the rubber duckies of the grown up world only here the bathtub was filled with ocean water. Bobbing colors reflected on the waves, teasing me with how out of reach they were until the tide finished playing with them and washed them up on the beach.

Even then I knew there was a rhythm to little boats. A sigh. An exhale all of their own. Rise and fall. Rise and fall. Ebb and flow. Come and go. To and fro as they moved with the watery hands beneath them. Hypnotic. Calming. But it's more than this.

There's a story to little boats.
They are the books of the sea carrying their own history in the very being of their wooded hulls. With every curl of weathered paint, with every scar on their frame, they speak. Telling their tales only to those who can imagine, using the language of those who can create their own worlds. If you have an ear to see and an eye to hear then you too will know...
There's something about little boats.

What about you? Do you find stories off the pages? What else besides books holds a tale for you?

  3. Love this! And the picture is so much cooler knowing you took it!

I find stories off the page a lot. It's part of the reason I love having a writer's mind. A crinkled leaf. An odd piece of litter that doesn't seem like it should be there. Ever single time I sit back in a restaurant or store and watch people. There are stories everywhere.

  5. Nice picture!

I'm afraid of boats (well, deep water mostly) so I don't find stories there. They are everywhere else, though!

  7. Your photo looks like it could be in the Caribbean, it is that familiar; wooden boats on the water. Stories are everywhere. Even rocks have a story to tell.

  8. That is a beautiful picture. The pastel blue is a photographer's dream.
Benches. Park benches, street benches, church benches--any bench, even new one's waiting for their first 'story.' I dream of a book of benches, each telling a short story. They are my favourite subject to photograph.

  9. You know my answer. The ground :)

Hey Tabitha! I just remembered...I have a boat photo to send you as well. Your pic reminded me. It'll be a surprise...along with the diminutive jewels...our ships passing in the night.

  10. I find stories in the most macabre things - insane asylums, abandoned buildings, and antiquated churches with eerie stained glass portrayals.

Then I seem to go in the opposite direction with senses, the way something feels, or smells, or something I might of seen from the corner of my eye. Oh yeah, I see stories all the time. (Hugs)Indigo

    Nice read Tabitha.

  12. So peaceful. This picture could be framed here to bring some sunshine to this cold climate :)
A story off the pages: wandering aimlessly into a forest where the moss covered trails led to serenity. There I would energe from the forest to see boats at the end of a dock or floating away into the sun set within my daydreams.

  13. Beautiful! This reminded me of the Breton Fisherman's Prayer:

    Dear God,
Be good to me. The sea is so wide and my boat is so small.

    Blessings!!!

  14. Oh my! Boats, especially wooden boats do the same thing to me, and old houses--farm houses...any vessel that carries a person...

  17. Tab, the human heart, the soul, has such a story, and so many remain untold. One of my greatest honors in life is to sit before someone at an opportune time and say, "Now then, tell me your story."

  19. Paintings hold stories for me, and the glow of lights through the curtains of homes I pass while driving home.

  20. I enjoy looking at the little boats every time I go to the pier. I like to dream of where I would go and how soothing the waves will feel as it rocks on the water.

I like watching people for stories. Sometimes I create stories about the old people sitting on benches or the children racing around.

    Lots of fun to imagine.

  21. Tabitha -
This is the first time I have been on your blog & this post is what attracted me here!
I have a "thing" for boats and beaches (in fact I have a store & a FB page & a blog all based on this theme!) but I have never been to articulate what I just read in your post. I completely identify with your description. I also take ALOT of boat pics, so I appreciate your photo too.
Thanks for putting my thoughts into words :D

  23. I love boats, but I get a little sea sick. If someone asked me to go boat riding, I'd never say no. Are you asking? :) The ocean itself holds many secrets and stories to tell. I'm drawn to it; maybe it's the Pisces in me. Love you Tab... enjoy your weekend.

  24. Pictures like this inspire me. Love Maui. Been there twice and could live there at least part of the year. This image above reminds me of Greece for some crazy reason. Never been there but its on my To Do List.

  25. OOH that is so evocative. I can feel your thrill and passion for those boats and the stories behind them. :O)

  26. Hair...the way people wear it ...it's colors, natural or played with.. the wirey mess of Einstiens mane, the soft bunny fluff of my Mother, Mr.T's Mohawk. The minds beneath the "glory".

Hands...Baby pudged: what will they do?
Age spotted & gnarled: What have they crafted & touched?
My Uncle used to take us out on SanDiego bay when i was young... those "May West" life jackets were as big as me!>

  27. I love the stories of boats, too. When I'm antiquing, looking at the artifacts from people's lives, I find multitudes of stories. I love your new look. Sorry I missed the contest. Your friend is very talented. Looking forward to your Wednesday writer posts.
